Today, of course, was the first Sunday of Advent, which marks one of my favorite times of year. Though I'm not too wild about some of the secular customs that mark Christmas, I do love the season and the sense of expectancy, looking forward to the coming of Christ. Today, I challenged our congregation to consider that the Jesus of the Christmas card and the nativity scene is the Jesus the world wants--weak, passive, helpless and asleep...yet the Jesus who came that night in Bethlehem was much more. He was the fulness of God: Creator. Judge. Righteous Anger. Holy Example. In that tiny child was given for us the fullness of the character of God Himself, that He might know what it means to live and work as we do, and that we might know Him as we ourselves are known.
My prayer for you this Christmas season is that you will encounter the Christ afresh and anew, and that His presence will bring to you a light that far outshines anything in this world.
May God bless you and yours this Christmas season as you worship and serve Him!
